Yoga and Pilates often sit side by side on the class schedule. Both involve working consciously with movement and breath. Even so, a class can feel very different depending on which you choose. It helps to take a closer look at how each one is structured and think about what you actually enjoy about training.

What makes up a yoga class

Depending on the style, yoga combines poses with breathing exercises and elements of focus or meditation. Some classes are calm and structured, others flowing and physically demanding. The word yoga alone, therefore, tells you little about the pace you can expect.

Maybe you'd like to get to know individual poses at a relaxed pace. Maybe you prefer movements that flow into one another. It's worth looking at the style and level when choosing a class. At Lokahi Loft, our Yoga and Pilates page has an overview of the styles we offer.

What Pilates focuses on

In Pilates, controlled movement and conscious body alignment are at the centre. Strength, mobility and balance are key themes of this training form. Many exercises require close attention to how you perform a movement and how you keep your body stable throughout.

That can feel focused and genuinely challenging, even when the movements look small. If you enjoy working on precise execution and clear exercise sequences, Pilates could suit you. Here too, classes vary in pace and difficulty.

Your preferences when choosing a class

Think about what you're curious to explore in a class. Would you like to discover different poses and also work with breathing exercises? Then a suitable yoga class is worth trying. Are you particularly interested in the precise interplay of movement and core control? Then Pilates is a good way to find out.

You can try both on different days. Afterwards, compare how clear the instructions were, whether the pace suited you, and whether you'd enjoy coming back. A class you like, that fits well into your week, makes it easier to attend regularly.
