In the functional area, the equipment often stands out first: kettlebells, ropes, or a large training rig. Behind it is a training idea that can also be adapted for beginners. You work with movements like pulling, pushing, standing up, or carrying, and learn to perform them with a suitable, controlled load.

At Lokahi Loft, functional training is part of our fitness offering. If you're curious, a first overview will help you get a sense of what's possible on the training floor and plan your start together with the team.

What functional training means

Functional training is an umbrella term for a range of training forms. It often focuses on movements where several joints and muscle groups work together. Which exercises make sense depends on your goal, your experience, and what's possible for you.

An exercise can start with just your own body weight and later be extended with added resistance. Support can also be used, for example to get to know a movement pattern first. This allows training to become gradually more demanding.

Four movement patterns to get oriented

A few simple movement groups help with a first overview. They're examples of how a session can be structured. You'll discuss with the training team which variation you'll do.

  • Standing up and bending: This includes squat variations, for example. Range of motion and support can be adjusted.
  • Pulling: A rowing movement is one example. What matters first is finding a controlled motion.
  • Pushing: This includes various pressing exercises. The difficulty depends, among other things, on the resistance and body position.
  • Carrying: Carrying a suitable weight trains you to move in a controlled way under load.

Start with a good introduction

Have a new exercise explained and demonstrated to you. Choose a resistance that lets you follow and repeat the movement. If the movement becomes unstable, a break, less weight, or a simpler variation can help.

A small selection of exercises you've understood is enough for the first session. Afterwards, note what worked well and where you still need guidance, so the next session can build on it. If a movement causes pain, stop and clarify the cause before continuing.

Discover functional training at the Loft

At Lokahi Loft, kettlebells, battle ropes and TRX bands are available for functional training, along with options for free-weight training and work at the rig. Which equipment suits your start depends on the exercise you choose. You'll find an overview on our fitness page.

The studio is located in Berlin-Halensee, in the Charlottenburg-Wilmersdorf district. If this is your first visit, mention when booking that you're interested in the functional area. That way you can clarify in advance what kind of support is available during your session.
